I'm an Associate Professor of English at Grand Valley State University in western Michigan, where I teach applied linguistics courses designed to prepare future educators to effectively support multilingual learners of English. My research interests include second language acquisition, methodology in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and meta-analysis and research synthesis in applied linguistics.
I'm fascinated by TESOL's role in both global contexts, where acquiring English often symbolizes opportunity and access, and in the U.S., where multilingual learners of English frequently face marginalization despite growing recognition of the benefits of multilingualism. Recently, my focus has shifted to the transformative potential of AI in education, particularly its innovative applications in second language learning and teaching.
Over the past two decades, I've had the privilege of working with thousands of students, including multilingual learners in ESL/EFL contexts, and pre-service and in-service teachers in the U.S., Chile, Thailand, and Japan. I also serve on the Board of Directors of MITESOL as co-editor of the MITESOL Journal and frequently deliver talks and lead workshops on TESOL-related topics.
